Poteau Plant To Shut Down; 230 Will Lose Jobs

Bremner Food Group laid off 100 workers Wednesday night, and said the plant will shut down on June 29.

POTEAU, Okla. (AP) — Officials say 230 people will lose their jobs when the Bremner Food Group plant closes in Poteau.

The company laid off 100 workers Wednesday night and says the plant will shut down on June 29. The plant produces snack foods, including crackers.

Poteau Mayor Jeff Shockley tells Fayetteville-Fort Smith television station KHOG (http://is.gd/4gm2sb ) that the layoffs are "devastating" for the community. The city says leaders will work to find a tenant for the 250,000-square-foot building.

Bremner Food Group is owned by Ralcorp. Bremner has seven facilities that produce crackers, sugar wafers, sandwich cookies and other snacks.

City leaders say they're working with officials in the Fort Smith Regional Alliance to assist the laid-off workers.
