Finnish Paper Workers Continue Strikes

Hundreds of Finnish workers have started new strikes at UPM-Kymmene aimed at speeding stalled wage talks for paper mill workers.

HELSINKI (AP) -- Hundreds of Finnish workers have started new strikes at UPM-Kymmene aimed at speeding stalled wage talks for paper mill workers.

The Pro-trade union says the walkouts by 1,200 members began Wednesday and will last three days. Meanwhile, 1,500 other union members are continuing a two-week strike at Stora Enso and Metsaliitto plants.

Earlier, union workers held a two-week walkout at UPM's mills and warned of more action unless agreement is reached in wage talks.

Union chairman Antti Rinne said Wednesday that the national conciliator was unable to propose mediation earlier this week after another round of labor negotiations broke down. No further talks have been announced.
