GE Transportation Recalls 280 Workers

GE Transportation in Erie says it is recalling 280 workers who were among nearly 1,500 laid off due to a business slowdown in November 2009.

ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- GE Transportation in Erie says it is recalling 280 workers who were among nearly 1,500 laid off due to a business slowdown in November 2009.

Company spokesman Stephen Koller tells the Erie Times-News that the company has "reset our business" since the layoffs and is "slowly picking up steam in terms of orders and production."

With the latest recall, GE has now brought back 800 of the 1,480 who were laid off.

Koller says the latest callback exhausts the company's list of workers who were eligible to return. He says many of the hundreds of others whose positions were cut in 2009 accepted early retirement.
