RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Showa Denko Carbon Inc. is expanding its plant near Ridgeville, creating about 100 new jobs.

State economic development and company officials made the announcement Wednesday.

Showa Denko Carbon has operated its Dorchester County plant for 23 years. The plant currently employs about 225 people. It makes about 40 percent of the nation's large diameter, ultra-high-power graphite electrodes.

The electrodes are used primarily in a steel-making process where material is melted by using an electric arc.

The company plans to begin hiring next year.
