DETROIT (AP) -- Chrysler says it will hire 1,000 more engineers and high-tech workers to help with global growth and the expansion of its small and midsize vehicle lineup.

The company said Tuesday that the hiring will take place during the next four months.

Chrysler says it has hired nearly 5,000 people since it emerged from bankruptcy protection in June 2009, including 1,000 factory workers at the Detroit plant that makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

General Motors also announced Tuesday that it will hire 1,000 more engineers and researchers during the next two years to work on electric vehicles.
