GM To Rehire Workers In Flint

General Motors plans to rehire nearly 200 workers in Flint, Mich., to make engines for the Chevrolet Volt electric car and Chevrolet Cruze compact.

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. plans to rehire nearly 200 workers in Flint, Mich., to make engines for the Chevrolet Volt electric car and Chevrolet Cruze compact.

A person familiar with GM's plans said Tuesday that the jobs are in addition to the 160 people already hired at the Flint South plant, which will begin making the engines early next year. The person asked not to be named because GM's announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.

The workers will come from another GM plant in Flint that closed earlier this month.

GM currently makes1.4-liter engines for the Volt and Cruze in Austria. It has invested $250 million in the Flint South plant to make the engines there.

GM will be able to produce 400 engines per day initially, but will gradually increase production.
