Organic Food Company Cuts Jobs In Indiana

Really Cool Foods started operations in Indiana two years ago with plans for hiring 1,000 workers, but now has about 200 after a round of layoffs this week.

CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. (AP) -- An organic food company that started operations in eastern Indiana two years ago with plans for hiring 1,000 workers now has about 200 employees after a round of layoffs this week.

Really Cool Foods laid off 31 full-time workers on Monday from its Cambridge City manufacturing and distribution center. Company spokesman Roger Harvey says the layoffs were needed because its holiday orders had been filled.

Harvey told the Palladium-Item that the company is optimistic about growth and adding employees during 2011.

Really Cool Foods opened its Cambridge City operations in 2008, saying it planned a $100 million investment and expected to hire 1,000 employees in a five- to seven-year period.

Harvey says that despite the layoffs, the company's sales remain strong.
