Shipbuilder NASSCO Lays Off 560 Workers

General Dynamics NASSCO, the West Coast's last big shipbuilder, has laid off 290 company workers and eliminated the jobs of 270 subcontractors.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The West Coast's last big shipbuilder has laid off 290 company workers and eliminated the jobs of 270 subcontractors.

General Dynamics NASSCO had announced in May that at least 900 layoffs -- about a quarter of its 4,100 workers -- were possible this month because of a prolonged industry slump.

Company president Fred Harris says they don't expect significant additional layoffs.

NASSCO builds logistics ships for the Navy and commercial container ships and tankers.

The layoffs would be the largest in 15 years for the Shipyard Workers Union Local 1998, which has about 2,300 members.
