C-17 Assembly Workers Negotiating With Boeing

Boeing and striking Long Beach C-17 factory workers are in negotiations aimed at ending nearly monthlong walkout that shuttered the aircraft assembly line.

LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- Representatives of Boeing Co. and striking Long Beach C-17 factory workers are meeting with a federal mediator in negotiations aimed at ending a nearly monthlong walkout that has shuttered the aircraft assembly line.

The meeting Thursday was the first bargaining session since 1,700 unionized mechanics walked out on May 11. They are expected to meet again Friday with federal mediator Linda Gonzalez.

United Aerospace Workers Local 148 says Boeing's contract offer has too many pension and medical coverage concessions.

The strike's effect on the economy led to federal mediation. Officials say the labor dispute has affected nearly 700 suppliers employing 30,000 people in 44 states.
