Sanford Corp Closing Wisconsin Plant

Newell Rubbermaid subsidiary is closing southern Wisconsin facility where it customizes pens for corporate clients, and moving about 150 jobs to Illinois and Mexico.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Sanford Corp. says it's closing the southern Wisconsin facility where it customizes pens for corporate clients, and is moving about 150 jobs to Illinois and Mexico.

Sanford owns Parker Pen Co. and is a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid Inc. in Atlanta.

Newell spokeswoman Connie Bryant says the company informed Janesville workers of the news Tuesday morning.

She says manufacturing and distribution operations will be transferred to Mexicali, Mexico by March of next year, while most administrative work will be shifted to Sanford's Oak Brook, Ill. headquarters.

Bryant says there may be some layoffs but it's too early to say how many.

Shares of Newell Rubbermaid nudged up 5 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $13.36 in morning trading Tuesday.
