Midwest Industries Lays Off 80 Workers

Marine products manufacturer in Ida Grove, Iowa, says the struggling economy is to blame for its layoff of 80 employees.

IDA GROVE, Iowa (AP) -- Officials with Midwest Industries in Ida Grove say the struggling economy is to blame for its layoff of 80 employees.

The company, which makes marine products such as boat hoists, boat trailers and docks, says the workers who are being laid off perform production, support and administrative duties.

Andy Brosius, president and CEO of Midwest Industries, says there has been a significant drop in sales. He says the company, which had about 280 employees, had to readjust its work force to match up with current and future sales expectations.

Brosius says the recreational marine industry has been hit especially hard by the country's economic struggles.
