IG Metall, German Industrial Firms Reach Wage Deal

German employers and union IG Metall say they have reached a new wage agreement in a pilot deal expected to be adopted by industrial workers nationwide.

BERLIN (AP) -- German employers and union IG Metall say they have reached a new wage agreement in a pilot deal expected to be adopted by industrial workers nationwide.

Workers will receive a one-time payment of euro320 ($440) in lieu of a pay raise for this year, and then an increase of 2.7 percent in 2011 both sides said Thursday.

The deal was reached for employees in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia but is expected to be adopted nationwide for some 3.6 million people.

IG Metall is Germany's biggest industrial union, representing workers in the metal and electronic industries.
