Cannondale Bikes Cutting Jobs

Maker of Cannondale bicycles is eliminating 200 jobs at a south-central Pennsylvania facility; bicycle frames will now be manufactured at a facility in Taiwan.

BEDFORD, Pa. (AP) -- The company that makes Cannondale bicycles is eliminating 200 jobs at a south-central Pennsylvania facility that will no longer make the bike frames.

The announcement Thursday by Dorel Industries Inc. means the Bedford facility will shrink to 100 workers by the end of 2010.

The bicycle frames will be manufactured at a facility in Taiwan.

Dorel says workers at the Bedford facility will shift their focus to bicycle assembly, machining, testing, warranty repair and more.

Cannondale's senior vice president and chief financial officer Ron Lombardi says the first round of layoffs will happen in early June.

Montreal-based Dorel bought Cannondale last year.
