CAW: GM Canada Can’t Afford Further Job Cuts

Canadian Auto Workers union says GM’s plants in Canada are already functioning with a bare minimum workforce and cannot afford more job cuts.

TORONTO (AP) -- The president of the Canadian Auto Workers union says General Motors Canada is already functioning with a bare minimum workforce and cannot afford any more job cuts after its parent company announced plans to cut 47,000 jobs globally.

Ken Lewenza said Tuesday that the Canadian subsidiary has been restructuring for the past 10 years and will only have 8,000 active workers once GM Canada finalizes its plant closures later this year.

Lewenza spoke shortly after GM requested an additional $16.6 billion more aid to survive, along with the job cuts, and plans to close five more U.S. plants as part of its restructuring plan submitted to the U.S. government.
