Brazil's Industrial Employment Plunges

Government figures for November show Brazil's industrial employment index posting its steepest decline in five years, falling by 0.6 percent from the previous month.

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Government figures for November show Brazil's industrial employment index posting its steepest decline in five years. About 60,000 workers lost their jobs.

Tuesday's statement by the IBGE statistics agency says that employment in the industrial sector fell by 0.6 percent from the month earlier -- the largest drop since the 0.7 percent slide in October 2003.

The figures come a week after the IBGE reported a 6.2 percent drop in industrial output for November - the steepest drop since December 2001.
