Plant Workers In Canada Vote To Join CAW

Workers at Qualtech Seating Systems in London, Ontario have voted about 75 percent in favor of joining the Canadian Auto Workers union.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) -- Workers at Qualtech Seating Systems in London, Ontario have voted about 75 percent in favor of joining the Canadian Auto Workers union.

In the same vote Wednesday, the workers also accepted a three-year contract already negotiated between management and the CAW.

The agreement offers some salary and benefit increases in addition to the promise of two-year recall rights for laid-off workers.

The deal also allows for binding arbitration in place of strike language, an issue that split the national union leading up to the vote.

Qualtech employs about 170 hourly workers. It's owned by Aurora, Ont.-based Magna International Inc.

Talks are ongoing between the CAW and Magna to hold votes at the company's Formet and Presstran plants in St. Thomas.
