Gates: U.S. Needs Brainy Foreign Workers

Microsoft chairman says many foreign students who earn computer science and other advanced college degrees in the U.S. are forced to leave the country when they graduate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Microsoft chairman Bill Gates says many foreign students who earn computer science and other advanced college degrees in the United States are forced to leave the country when they graduate.

In Wednesday's testimony before the U.S. House Science & Technology Committee he said it would make sense to change immigration law to allow those students to remain and work in America. Many have been educated at schools supported by taxpayers.

Gates says U.S. companies should be allowed to hire more high-tech workers from other countries. He also urges improvements in math and science education, plus increased investment in basic research.
