U.S. Strike Forces More Layoffs In Canada

Ontario, Canada’s auto sector is forcing more layoffs due to a strike by American Axle's 3,600 workers in the U.S.

OWEN SOUND, Ont. (AP) — A strike by American Axle and Manufacturing Inc.'s 3,600 workers in the U.S. is forcing more layoffs in the Ontario auto sector.

Tenneco Inc., says it will lay off 430 employees at its exhaust systems plant in Owen Sound, Ont., at least until the end of the week.

Tenneco had earlier said it would lay off 200 workers at a similar facility in Cambridge, Ont.

The American Axle also prompted 100 layoffs at Chrome Shield, an auto supply plant in Windsor, Ont., which makes chrome bumpers for GM.

The walkout also idled GM's truck assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont.

American Axle and the United Auto Workers haven't returned to the bargaining table since talks broke off on Feb. 25.
