PORT EDWARDS, Wis. (AP) ā The state is expected to file a petition this week seeking federal assistance for the workers expected to lose their jobs when the Domtar mill is closed in Port Edwards this spring.
Cindy Kiesling is program coordinator for the state Department of Workforce Development Labor, Education and Training Center. Kiesling says additional assistance from the U.S.
Department of Labor could increase unemployment benefits from 26 weeks to 78 weeks for the majority of the 500 workers in Port Edwards.
The Labor Department's Trade Adjustment Assistance program requires a connection between the layoffs and losing the jobs to foreign workers or increased imports.
