British Drugmaker Adding Jobs In Massachusetts

Shire PLC plans to expand its Massachusetts operations, with 680 additional jobs over the next eight years.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — British drugmaker Shire PLC plans to expand its Massachusetts operations, with 680 additional jobs over the next eight years.

A Shire unit, Shire Human Genetic Therapies, says it expects to invest $394 million (euro269.4 million) to construct a new manufacturing plant in Lexington.

The company already employs 675 people in Cambridge, but has transferred some operations to Lexington Technology Park. That shift to Lexington will accelerate with construction of the manufacturing plant.

Shire said Thursday that it had considered expanding out of state.

Other states offered incentive packages to compete with Massachusetts, which extended tax and other incentives totaling more than $40 million (euro27.3 million). The town of Lexington offered an additional $7 million (euro4.8 million).
