Spirit Aerospace Workers Agree To Keep Union

Slightly more than 54 percent of voters favored retaining representation from a unit of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Professional and technical workers at Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita are keeping their union.

Slightly more than 54 percent of voters Tuesday favored retaining representation from a unit of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace. The tally was 1,073 votes for SPEEA, with 895 votes against.

About 2,460 workers are affected by the outcome of the decertification vote.

Spirit engineers, who are represented by a separate SPEEA unit, are not affected.

Last year, SPEEA's professional and technical unit at the Boeing plant in Wichita was decertified after a second try. In 2004, Boeing workers rejected decertification and reaffirmed the union.
