Company will eliminate 85 jobs by Friday and another 105 jobs will be eliminated by the end of June at its plant in High Point, North Carolina.

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) -- Thomas Built Buses says it will eliminate nearly 200 jobs at its plant in High Point this month.

The company said Monday that it will eliminate 85 jobs by Friday. The company said 105 jobs will be eliminated by the end of June. It did not say how many full-time and part-time jobs are being phased out.

The company said a prolonged and widespread economic downturn has affected its customers' purchasing plans.

Thomas Built Buses says the cuts are being made in accordance with the seniority language in its labor contract.

The High Point Economic Development Corp. said Thomas Built Buses had nearly 1,600 full-time workers as of December.

The company had recently spent more than $10 million to renovate the plant.
