A communications electronics parts company has announced that it will close its Lowell engineering and manufacturing facility, costing the city about 300 jobs.
Cobham announced Wednesday that the jobs done in Lowell will be shifted to other company locations to maintain efficiency and competitiveness.
Company official Greg Alan Caires tells The Sun that the facility is scheduled to close by November 2015, but the company will begin transferring operations to other Cobham facilities immediately.
He says the nearest similar facility is in Exeter, New Hampshire, which may be able to absorb some workers from Lowell.
City Manager Kevin Murphy says the city will work hard to fill the space Cobham will vacate, and the Career Center of Lowell will help laid-off workers find new jobs.
