LG, Sony In Court Over Seized PlayStations

Lawyers for Sony and LG Electronics facing off in Dutch court over LG-requested seizure by Dutch customs agents of Sony PlayStation 3 imports.

AMSTERDAM (AP) -- Lawyers for Sony and LG Electronics are facing off in a Dutch court over an LG-requested seizure by Dutch customs agents of Sony PlayStation 3 imports earlier this month.

The Netherlands has become an unexpected battleground in a wider patent clash between the two companies after South Korea's LG quietly obtained permission from the Breda District Court on Feb. 28 to have the video game consoles seized.

LG convinced the Breda court that it had enough evidence for a summary judgment under Dutch law and if Sony had been warned ahead of time, the Japanese company might have moved the consoles to a different European jurisdiction.

Sony has denied LG's claims of patent violations. The hearing Thursday is the first time Sony will be able to respond in court.
