3M, Quanta To Make Touchscreen Systems

3M has partnered with Taiwanese technology company Quanta Computer to form new company that will make and market parts for touchscreen devices.

NEW YORK (AP) -- 3M Co. said Thursday it has partnered with Taiwanese technology company Quanta Computer to form a new company that will make and market parts for touchscreen devices.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreement is an extension of a current deal between the two companies, through which they mass produce touch modules, sensors, electronics and systems for gadgets ranging from tablets to notebook computers.

The new company is separate from 3M Touch Systems Inc. Its focus will be on the design and manufacturing of touchscreen gadgets for casinos, education, foodservice, digital sins healthcare and retail markets.

3M, based in Maplewood, Minn., is best known for everyday items like Post-Its and Scotch Tape but also makes a wide range of products including everything from stethoscopes to computer arms.

Shares of 3M fell $1.36 to $91.81 in midday trading.
