NEW YORK (AP) -- Nintendo Co. said Tuesday it sold more than 7 million Wii gaming consoles in the U.S. in 2010.
The Japanese video game maker said this marks the third year in a row that it sold over 7 million Wiis, a first for a game console. To date, Nintendo said it has sold more than 34 million Wiis in the U.S. Industry watchers have been worried about declining sales of the gaming system which pioneered motion controls now available from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. too. But Wii sales picked up during the holidays, as they have done every year.
Nintendo also said it has sold more than 47 million of its handheld DS systems since the original model launched in 2004. The company plans to release the latest, the 3DS, in March. The 3DS lets users see 3-D content without wearing special glasses.
