Chip Maker To Build New Plant

Executive for Micron Technology says the computer chip maker intends to build a new manufacturing plant in Boise, Idaho.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An executive for Micron Technology says the computer chip maker intends to build a new manufacturing plant in Boise.

Micron Chief Operating Officer Mark Durcan told KTVB-TV the new facility is not likely to create many new jobs, but would help secure the company's existing work force in the Treasure Valley.

The company says the decision to build in Boise is tied to the proximity of existing research and development offices, as well as tax incentives approved by the Legislature three years ago to encourage expansion in Idaho.

The announcement comes months after the company reported a $262 million loss for the first quarter of 2008 and last year's lay off of more than 1,000 workers in Boise.
