Apple Japan Recalling iPod Nano

Subsidiary of California-based Apple Inc., will recall the iPods with overheating rechargeable batteries after complaints that the players had caught fire.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Apple Japan Inc., a subsidiary of California-based Apple Inc., said Wednesday it will recall iPod nano portable music players with overheating rechargeable batteries.

Apple Japan said it will replace the batteries free of charge after a number of complaints that players had caught fire, resulting in deformation.

The recall announcement follows a report Tuesday by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry that overheating iPod nano players may have caused 17 incidents in nine prefectures this year, including three fire incidents in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture.

The incidents were connected to first-generation iPod nano players, Apple Japan said, adding that it is trying to identify the cause.

The company advised concerned users to call toll-free on 0120-277535.
