Our 'C-Average' Food Safety

A recent CBS poll has found that only 7 percent of American consumers give our food safety system an “A,” and a majority (34 percent) give it a “C.” And while we have an incredible selection of food available to us, our system seems pretty safe at first glance. In Canada, 33 percent of consumers get sick each year from something they ate.

And while we have an incredible selection of food available to us, our system seems pretty safe at first glance. In Canada, 33 percent of consumers get sick each year from something they ate. The U.S. is slightly better, topping off at 25 percent. Not too bad, right? Only 2 percent of our British cousins get sick from their food, and less than 1 percent of the French take ill. Maybe a “C” is too generous, then. So what can we do to improve our food safety system?
