Recall Forces GM to Extend Plant Shutdown

The recall has already cost the company $1.8 billion.

General Motors is extending the shutdown of the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan by two weeks, according to Reuters.

Orion Assembly’s lull in production will continue through at least Sept. 24.

The announcement is the “result of a battery pack shortage” tied to a recall of Chevrolet Bolt EVs, which came after reports of battery fires.

The recall exceeded 140,000 Bolts and cost GM an estimated $1.8 billion.

GM said it would attempt to receive reimbursement from LG, the battery supplier.

Assembly plants in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Silao, Mexico, which stopped production due to the semiconductor shortage, will resume on Sept. 13.

GM added that all its North American full-size truck and full-size SUV plants will run at full production next week.
