PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2017 Product Review: KSA-70 Three-Zone Steam Tunnel

PDC has debuted a new Sanitary Design version of its popular KSA-70 Three-Zone Steam Tunnel. This all stainless-steel version is ideally suited for food, beverage, dairy and other facilities with high sanitation requirements.

PDC has debuted a new Sanitary Design version of its popular KSA-70 Three-Zone Steam Tunnel. The KSA-70 steam tunnel is a compact, 70" long system that precisely focuses steam onto specific points of the shrink-sleeved packages. This all stainless-steel version is ideally suited for food, beverage, dairy and other facilities with high sanitation requirements.

The KSA-70 Triple Zone Steam Tunnel incorporates many of the engineering features which have distinguished PDC's larger capacity tunnels and labeling systems. It is ideal for applications that demand precise label registration and shape conformance, or for packages involving contents that are flammable or under pressure.

KSA offers maximum flexibility in steam tube positioning, including all X, Y and Z axis, also pitch and roll. Positions are confirmed using permanent, laser-etched scales and positive lock-down features. The first zone in this steam tunnel machine enables the anchoring of the label under the bottle’s bottom radius; the subsequent two zones cover the body and neck, focusing steam with pinpoint accuracy. Pressure adjustments can be made "in real time," without waiting for the tunnel to cool down.

Steam zones are individually monitored to assure precise, repeatable set up. Steam is filtered, and particulates and moisture removed. The standard steam filter can be upgraded to culinary grade. Other standard features include a steam venting manifold with dampers, and a condensate diverter package. A powered venting blower is also available.

Opening dimensions for the KSA-70 are 7” wide and up to 14" in height, with other special openings available. The KSA-70 provides precise label registration and distortion-free graphics. PVC, PETG, OPS and PLA films, in gauges as thin as 30 microns, are all compatible. The KSA-70 can process up to 250 cpm, depending on container size and shape. Containers can be any geometry, including round, oval and square.

Several levels of steam filtering provide up to culinary grade steam, reducing moisture while also removing impurities.  PDC can also provide a range of steam boilers optimally sized to customer requirements.

The KSA-70 steam tunnel is an excellent choice for end-use packagers. It is ideal as a stand-alone system, or as a supplemental "finishing zone" for an existing tunnel. It is also highly efficient as a pre- or post-shrink module. The KSA-70 is equally well-suited to contract packers who need a highly reliable, easily repeatable and very economical steam shrink tunnel.
