NEW YORK (AP) — Handset makers Motorola Inc. and Research In Motion Ltd. say they have settled a patent complaint that Motorola brought to the International Trade Commission earlier this year.

The companies say that RIM, the Canada-based BlackBerry maker, will give Motorola of Schaumburg, Ill., an upfront payment plus continuing royalties for the use of its mobile technology. The companies did not disclose specific terms.

They say the deal includes an agreement to cross license various patents related to industry wireless standards and wireless e-mail.

The two companies are major rivals in the growing market for high-end cell phones with Web browsing and other features.
