Fayetteville, North Carolina — Sanderson Farms says it is no longer planning to build a $95 million poultry processing plant in Cumberland County, but that didn't stop hundreds of people from turning out for a public hearing in which most speakers opposed the project.
Media outlets report almost 800 people attended the 5-hour hearing in Fayetteville on Monday night.
Almost 100 people addressed the crowd and about three-quarters opposed the plant that could create almost 1,000 jobs.
Sanderson Farms said last month it is no longer considering the county, but opponents worry the plant could be built.
The county board of commissioners has been considering a $6 million incentive package to try to lure the plant.
Supporters say the plant will bring needed jobs. Opponents worry about its effects on the environment.
