Yamaha Motor To Build Motorcycle Factory In India

The factory will be located on the outskirts of the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, with operations scheduled to commence in 2014 and annual production targeted at 1.8 million units by 2018.

TOKYO, May 14 (Kyodo) — Motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha Motor Co. said Monday it will build a new factory in southern India in response to the expanding local market.

The factory will be located on the outskirts of the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, with operations scheduled to commence in 2014 and annual production targeted at 1.8 million units by 2018.

The Iwata, Shizuoka Prefecture-based company also plans to enhance its production bases in the northern part of India to attain a combined production capacity of 2.8 million units by 2018, around 4.7 times current capacity.

The company aims to export products from the new factory in the future to other emerging markets, such as those in South America and Africa, officials said.
