ILION, N.Y. (AP) — About 100 new jobs are expected within the next year at a Mohawk Valley firearms manufacturing plant scheduled for a nearly $6 million expansion project.

State and Herkimer County officials announced the new jobs and expansion Tuesday at the Remington Arms Co. plant in Ilion (IHL'-ee-uhn), 55 miles east of Syracuse.

The additional jobs will boost total employment at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion to more than 1,000. Some $2.5 million in state grants and subsidies is helping fund the expansion.

In March, Remington's parent company, the Freedom Group, announced that its Marlin Firearms plant in North Haven, Conn., would close by June 2011.

Remington was founded in Ilion in 1816. The Madison, N.C.-based privately held company makes rifles, shotguns and ammunition.
