MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Snowmobile maker Arctic Cat Inc. said Thursday it will begin manufacturing some of its own snowmobile engines in St. Cloud, Minn., beginning after the 2014 model year.

Currently, Suzuki Motor Corp. supplies all engines for Arctic Cat's snowmobiles.

Suzuki will continue to supply the company with engine parts to service existing engines after the 2014 model year.

Arctic Cat Chairman and CEO Christopher Twomey said the change was part of an effort by the company to gain more control over its products and enhance its ability to meet regulatory and performance requirements. The move should also help the company potentially reduce costs, he said.

The company has been building engines for all-terrain vehicles at the St. Cloud facility since 2007.

Arctic Cat anticipates snowmobile engine production will begin at the plant in fiscal 2015.

Shares in Arctic Cat added a penny to close at $9.36.
