WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — More than 1,100 laid-off workers in south-central Kansas may soon be getting some added help from a $7.5 million grant funded by federal stimulus money.

The grant was announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Labor. It's aimed at workers laid off from jobs in aviation, construction, health care, manufacturing and retail.

Aviation is the biggest group. The Labor Department says most of the layoffs occurred at Boeing, Bombardier Aerospace, Cessna Aircraft and Hawker Beechcraft Corp.

The grant was awarded to the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas for supportive services such as training and employment-related help.
