MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama agriculture officials are checking the recall of several Blue Bell Ice Cream products after the company discovered a potential Listeria contamination.
Alabama agriculture officials said in a statement Tuesday that single-serving cups of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla have been recalled across 23 states after a cup in Kansas tested positive for Listeria. Officials say they're checking whether any of the recalled products are being served in Alabama.
So far five people in Kansas have developed listeriosis after eating Blue Bell products while hospitalized for unrelated causes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says three of them have died.
An infection could be serious or fatal in young children or frail or elderly adults.
The recall applies to institutional and food service customers. Convenience stores and supermarkets are not affected.
