PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island wants to help local farmers and fishermen market their products.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced Thursday that the state plans to award $200,000 in grants to farmers and seafood businesses to help them promote their products.

The marketing assistance program is backed by $100,000 in state funds and a $110,000 grant from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, the Henry P. Kendall Foundation and the Rhode Island Foundation.

Chafee says seafood and agriculture are two fast-growing sectors of the state's economy.

Nonprofit organizations and small and beginning businesses are eligible to apply for the grants, which will be administered by the state's Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Food Policy Council.
