OXNARD, Calif. (AP) β A Southern California grower and food processing firm has expanded its voluntarily recall of packaged onions and celery because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Oxnard-based Gills Onions LLC say no illnesses have been linked to the recall.
Gills Onions initially announced a recall on July 18. The product list was expanded on Thursday to include diced, slivered and whole-peeled onions and diced onion and celery mix with use-by dates on or before Aug. 3.
The recalled products were shipped to stores in California, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington and Canada.
The FDA and Gills officials are investigating the cause of the contamination and how Listeria was found in its plant.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β Federal food safety inspectors say prepared barbecue chicken salads sold at Trader Joe's are being recalled because they contain diced onions that may be contaminated with the potentially deadly listeria bacteria.
In a release Friday, United States Department of Agriculture officials say Huxtable's Kitchen of Vernon, Calif. is recalling about 5,610 pounds of the salads.
No illnesses have been reported from the salads.
Products with use-by dates through July 30 and bearing the establishment number "P-11079" are subject to the recall.
The 14.5-ounce salads were distributed in Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, Southern Nevada and Texas.
The bacteria can cause a flu-like illness, a symptom of a serious infection that typically affects older adults, pregnant women and those with weak immune systems.
The illness can result in death.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) β Whole Foods in Florida is recalling foods with raw onions in them because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Some of the foods being recalled are salads, dressings and sandwiches. The products that may have been contaminated were prepared at the company's 17 locations between July 7 and Friday.
The company says they have not received any complaints about illnesses.
Affected customers should throw away the product and return to the store with their receipt for a free refund.
Listeria monocytogenes can serious illnesses and in some cases death.
