In the wake of several high-profile and deadly foodborne illness outbreaks, the FDA is proposing stricter rules in an effort to prevent the kinds of contaminations that have led to large-scale threats to public health in recent years. The Center for Science in the Public Interest applauds the proposal. Caroline Smith DeWall, the director of the organization said,

"The new law should transform the FDA from an agency that tracks down outbreaks after the fact, to an agency focused on preventing food contamination in the first place."
