(Canadian Press) — Several types of cat and kitten food are being recalled over concerns they may contain too little of an essential vitamin.
Diamond Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling its Premium Edge brand adult cat dry food, senior cat hairball management dry food and kitten dry food, as well as its Diamond Naturals kitten dry food.
It says tests show the kibble may contain inadequate levels of thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, which cats need to maintain normal nervous system function.
The recalled products were distributed in Ontario and Quebec in packages that range from 170-gram samples to 2.7-kilogram and 8.1-kilogram bags, with expiry dates from July 2013 to January 2014.
The company says there have been no complaints of health issues related to the products, but warns cats fed the kibble exclusively for weeks may be at risk of thiamine deficiency.
Early signs of the condition include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss, and advanced cases may develop neurological symptoms such as wobbly walking and seizures.
A complete list of the recalled products is available online at www.petfoodinformationcenter.com. The company says customers can apply for a replacement product or refund.
