ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Umpqua Dairy says it has traced the source of salmonella that triggered a voluntary recall following reports of illnesses.
Umpqua President Doug Feldkamp said the salmonella was found in equipment that washes and sanitizes crates receiving packaged milk and juice.
Feldkamp said he didn't know how the salmonella got into the system, which state health and agriculture officials say has been cleaned and now meets safety standards.
Packaging resumed at the plant Wednesday but Feldkamp told the News-Review in Roseburg the company will continue to monitor the system.
The Oregon Public Health Division attributed 23 reports of illness in nine counties to the bacteria at the dairy. Two people were hospitalized.
