Campbell Ships Low-Salt Soups

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Campbell Soup Co. said Tuesday that it will begin shipping 21 varieties of its lower sodium soups this month. The company has been gradually reducing the amount of sodium in its products over several years and said these soups have 25 to 45 percent lower sodium than earlier levels.

The company has been gradually reducing the amount of sodium in its products over several years and said these soups have 25 to 45 percent lower sodium than earlier levels. It brings the total number of it soups in which it has cut salt to roughly 130 varieties.

The soups include flavors like Chicken with Rice and Minestrone and are expected to appear on supermarket shelves in June with all varieties in stores by mid-September.

Campbell Soup said by fall it will offer more than 200 reduced sodium products, eight times what it offered five years ago.

A number of foodmakers have been reducing the amount of sodium in their products to respond to consumer demand as well as increasing health and regulatory pressure.

Shares of Campbell Soup rose 31 cents to close at $37 Tuesday.
