PRNewswire – Stacy Slagor of San Diego, a first time cooking competitor, has won the “Great American SPAM Championship,” an annual recipe contest at state and county fairs across the country. Her Fusion Fajitas feature sauteed SPAM Classic, red bell peppers and onions wrapped in tortillas with a sweet and spicy pineapple salsa.

More than 800 people cooked up dishes for the annual recipe contest throughout the latter half of 2009. Host fairs range from Slagor's San Diego County Fair to the state fairs of New York, Minnesota, Iowa, Texas and many others. Hormel Foods Test Kitchens then conducted their post-season judging and credited Slagor for her tasty twist on a classic and delicious dish.

The 40-year-old won out of 40 different first place winning recipes. For her grand prize, Slagor is off to Hawaii this spring for an all expense paid trip to the Waikiki SPAM JAM Festival (instead of opting for a $3,000 cash prize.) Slagor will attend the festival in late April with her husband, Jay. In the SPAM Championship youth division, 11-year-old Michaela Smith's recipe for SPAM & Cheese Calzone won the $2000 cash prize.

Both recipes are available at www.spam.com by search words fusion fajitas and cheese calzone.
