The maker of Halo Top low-calorie ice cream reportedly hopes to cash in on the trend of large food companies acquiring smaller, premium brands.

Reuters reports that privately owned Eden Creamery LLC is working with Barclays on a potential sale that could value the Los Angeles company at up to $2 billion.

Halo Top's sales climbed among increasingly health-conscious consumers in recent years just as overall ice cream sales declined.

In January, Eden Creamery said Halo Top became the best-selling by-the-pint ice cream in the U.S. by surpassing Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs — two premium brands owned by Unilever and a joint venture of General Mills and Nestlé, respectively.

Unilever previously purchased lower-fat gelato and sorbet brand Talenti in 2014.

Although the brand is marketed as low-calorie and low-sugar, Reuters noted that the company faced criticism over its use of artificial sweeteners.
