Explosion at Power Plant Coal Bunker Injures One

DTE Energy Co. says an explosion in a coal bunker at its St. Clair Power Plant left one worker with a minor injury and caused minor damage at the facility.

EAST CHINA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — DTE Energy Co. says an explosion in a coal bunker at its St. Clair Power Plant left one worker with a minor injury and caused minor damage at the facility.

Utility spokesman John Austerberry says the explosion happened around 9 p.m. Sunday at the coal-fired plant in St. Clair County's East China Township, about 55 miles northeast of Detroit. Austerberry says the worker was treated at the scene. The cause of the explosion was under investigation.

Austerberry says the plant's fueling system was temporarily shut down following the explosion and one of the plant's six power generating units was taken out of service.

Four other generating units were running Monday and another already was shut down for maintenance. DTE says electrical service to customers wasn't disrupted.
