North Sea Rig Evacuated after Gas Leak

Energy group Total has evacuated a platform in the North Sea due to a gas leak.

LONDON (AP) — Energy group Total has evacuated a platform in the North Sea due to a gas leak.

The company's UK exploration subsidiary Total E&P UK said Monday that all the 238 workers from the platform were evacuated safely.

The well, which is located 240 km (150 miles) east of the Scottish city of Aberdeen, sprang a leak Sunday after problems with the well control system. The company said it has alerted all the relevant authorities and was trying to stop the leak.

A surveillance flight on Monday morning detected a sheen on the water around the platform but the company said it had no details on its size.
