DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A senior Dubai energy official says the Gulf emirate plans to generate 5 percent of its power needs from renewable energy sources by 2030.

Saeed Mohammed al-Tayer, vice chairman of Dubai's Supreme Council of Energy, says that the bulk of green energy will be generated by solar power.

Al-Tayer, who spoke to reporters on Monday, did not say how much the project is expected to cost.

Nearly all of Dubai's existing power supply comes from natural gas.

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, one of the world's largest oil producers, but it has to import natural gas to meet its rising energy demands.
