Caterpillar Could Pick N.C. For 2nd Expansion

Last week Caterpillar said it would build a factory in Winston-Salem producing axle units for large mining equipment, and may soon announce expansion plans for its plant in Sanford.

SANFORD, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue is expected to praise heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. again as the company gears up for expansion.

Perdue is making a jobs announcement Thursday on the site of Caterpillar's existing plant in Sanford.

Lee County commissioners offered up to $900,000 to help the corporate giant start a $30 million expansion. The Caterpillar plant builds tight-turning skid loaders widely used in landscaping and construction.

Lee County Economic Development director Bob Heuts says the expansion could produce more than the 300 jobs previously discussed.

Caterpillar last week said it would build a new factory in Winston-Salem producing axle units for large mining equipment, employing about 500 full-time and contract workers in five years.
